Scottish pace makers
Don't hold me up Sir

Having now been at the club for three years, (I know!) one thing I have come to understand is the Club's understandable obsession with pace of play. I myself, am a quick player and love to blast round the links. I recently was told about a trip to the Scottish links by one of our links friends who fondly recalls the folllowing story.

He recounted his visit to one famous club where he’d twice had amusing experiences with regards the pace of play.

On a visit a few years ago, he and an English journalist had been taken out by the secretary who had been quick to point out that three-balls were only very rarely allowed on the course.

Now this is not normally the done thing,” he said with lilting Scottish brogue, “And I should advise you that a three-ball here will take no longer than 2 hours and 50 minutes.”

They drove off the first and the secretary charged away at a mighty speed. The two were jogging to keep up and picking up left, right and centre as they struggled to maintain his pace. Then the journalists mobile phone rang (appalling etiquette in itself,) but he was forgiven when it turned out to be his wife who had gone into labour. Hasty goodbyes were said and the Englishman headed back towards the clubhouse. The secretary turned to our friend and said, “Right, we’re now a two ball and I should advise you that a two-ball here will take no longer than 2 hours and 35 minutes, so we better step on it.”

Another time at the same club, an American journalist was chatting to the starter as he waited to tee off. Just sharing a bit of trans-Atlantic banter. As he was told to make his way to the tee he jokingly asked the starter, “Say, before I tee off, what’s the course record here?”

I believe it’s 1 hour and 56 minutes,” was the starter’s deadpan reply.

It's all in the shaft stiffness, I am told

The healthy heart club is coming soon

Some of you may remember early last year I was talking about the possibility of starting a healthy heart club at our links. Now during lockdown I have decided to reinvent this concept and I am currently seeking finance and funding to help start up this project.

I myself have been recently diagnosed with some heart issues (I do have one!) and I wanted to come up with a plan of how to regain some of my fitness and try and shift some of this inevitable lockdown flab I seem to have acquired. I am still at the the planning stage at the moment but some of the events and ideas are:- early morning course speed walks, early morning course jogs, health screening (by industry professionals) get into golf programs and golf coaching training. These are just a few ideas of what we could possibly achieve when we get this going. Covid has of course hampered a lot of things going forward but I wanted to canvas some of your opinions on whether somethng like this may be of interest to you all.

Please click the link below to express your interest and if you have any ideas of what we could offer in such a program, it would be great to get some of your ideas onboard.

And, finally

Video of the Week

We love golf through thick and thin. Every person who has played the sport will have experienced the euphoria that comes with hitting a brilliant shot. Likewise, we've all felt a little bit of anger on the course too. Sit back and enjoy this week's video from the European Tour, which features some of the tour's 'angriest' golfers in Hatton, Poulter and Stenson.
