Course works update

Micro tines are an important way of allowing a green surfce to breathe. These are 10" micro pencil tines which punture the surface and break up compaction and allow the roots to breathe.

Hopefully this little bit of info goes a long way to helping you see how the lockdown isn't all bad. It gives us the time and space to be able to do some works unique in the time frame we have. It bodes well for a great winters golf on a wonderful golf course. I will keep you up to date with all that is going on, on both courses, over the coming weeks.

During the lockdown period we are looking at ways to keep the membership (and our golfing friends far and wide) involved in what we are doing as a club. One of these events is the all new Coaches Forum. In this, all new online event, we will be talking all things golf, how we coach, what we look for in the process, the coaching process itself and methods of play. Myself and the PGA coaches here at the club, as well as special tour guests will be available to chat golf and how we can improve and understand the game we all love.

So, what do we need from you? This is a totally FREE event and we will be talking about full swing in particular Driving (my speciality), the short game (with Wedge Matrix instructor Mark) and lots more that I want you to tell me about. In the next few days what I would like from you, is questions about golf and what you would like us to talk about.

All questions are welcome and we will do our best to answer them, it's all set to be a great night of Q&A and our first attempt at this all new coaching concept for you, our friends and members.

World handicap System

Well, the transistion from the old CDH system to the all new WHS has now been pretty much completed. It hasn't been the smoothest of transitions to the new system and for sure, there will be bumpy times ahead as it settles. The next few months will give us time to get used to the new system and all its intricacies as well as giving us all time to get our heads around the change, myself included.

I have been overseeing the transition, from the very first steps in 2018 to the launch last week. I am still getting used to it myself with new systems to understand and administer, so please be gentle as we learn this together. We may not always have the immediate answer to your queries but we will do our best to answer any of your queries as fast as we can.One things is for sure once we get used to this new system it will certainly revolutionise the way we play and score golf.

Club gems

A classic 1920's cartoon

Ever since I first moved here in 2018, I have always admired this print in the office. Usually stored away in the corner of the office, I often get it out for a look and a little chuckle. There were certainly some characters in the club at that time, as there are now! Looking at the the characters the ones that jump out are :- Far right, Mr A J Stanley (oldest member) and a winner at Wimbledon, the club Heavyweight F K Selby and Lt Col C P Porch who's objects in life seem to be rolling the course and exterminating rabbits.

Maybe we should look into a cartoonist doing an updated 2020 version maybe something for the 100 Club to finance maybe?

Anyone wanting to take a look at this wonderful record of some of our members through time, let me know and I will get it out for the members to take a look. We are planning to have some of these visual records moved into places, for the membership to see. Watch this space.

Back to golf in December

Just a quick note to you all about what may occur in December, if we return to the golf course. As you are all aware, we have been locked down and we have been given a provisional date for our return to golf on Thursday, 3rd December. Now, we are unsure whether this will be the case, so I have switched off the booking for golf on both of the courses. As soon as I have an answer as to what we may be allowed to do with regards teetimes (no of people), I will then begin to put our plans into place.

There will be a few rules we will have to put in place to be fair to all members and there will be restrictions on booking times (how far in advance you can book) and how many times you can play in any one week as we did before on our return to golf last time.

I will of course keep you posted on what we intend to do.

Hitting your irons close

Hopefully, you’ll be watching The Masters on TV this week as there will no doubt be plenty of great golf on display. If ever there was a course that put a premium on finding the greens, it’s Augusta National.
