What a week we have had weather wise this week. With several storms washing their way through the Links, it has been a week of serious deluge for sure. The course has coped remarkably well to the volume of water we have had and I am sure several courses around the area haven’t done as well as we have. We are very lucky indeed to be able to play, generally mud free, for most of the year unlike some of our friends in Kent. With our wonderful growing soils of the garden of England, they fall hand in hand with heavier soils, that love to get claggy in the winter months. I for one love the fact I can get away with light coloured trousers all year round, as does Emma. You may have now noticed that the tining has been almost completed on the Championship. What the eagle eyed of you may also of noticed is that it's only the 12 inch pencil tines we have been using and not the hollow cores I set you up for the last couple of weeks. I thought it best to prepare you for the worst and in fact, its actually not that noticeable at all. We will sand and dress the greens this week and that will pretty much be it for greens maintenance this winter, until we hit 2021. Thanks to Malcolm for what will be his final maintenance project of his career, Malcolm does of course retire in early December. The filming being done on the course went along without any real hiccups at all and I am sue you will agree if you have been out recently, there was very little damage at all to the courses. I have to congratulate them on how they organised themselves it was very well put together. I would love to share some photos of the event but we are embargoed to not share any media until the film shows next year. Anyone interested though can see my photos of the filming in the shop if you fancy a look. I did get to meet the star Mark Rylance (an Oscar winner I’ll have you know) I did pay him a compliment which didn’t go down to well. I said “lovely swing you had out there, Mark” to which he replied “I hope not I’m supposed to be the world’s worst golfer” Obviously a rubbish method actor, in my opinion. Anyway, hope you enjoy this week’s packed edition of Links news. |
The golfing season would have pretty much finished by this point if it were a ‘normal year’. The men’s game would have named its four Major champions, the women’s game its five big winners, and another cracking Ryder Cup enjoyed.
Sadly, this hasn’t been the case but the good – okay, great - news is that there are still two Majors left to play: an autumnal Masters Tournament from Augusta National and the U.S Women’s Open from Champions Golf Club. We'll find out who'll be wearing the Green Jacket in just a couple of weeks, and the world’s best are certainly finding their A-games in preparation. Patrick Cantlay won the weekend’s Zozo Championship by one shot from Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm; Rory McIlroy made a record-breaking 29 birdies over the same four days, albeit he mixed them with 8 bogeys and 3 doubles; Hatton and Fitzpatrick are performing well both sides of the Atlantic; DJ is fresh off the back of his FedEx Cup triumph and Bryson is testing longer driver shafts as his looks to dominate Augusta. We’d love to know who you think has the best chance of winning this year’s Masters. Also, are you excited to see how Augusta plays in November compared to its traditional April slot?
