Welcome to this week's newsletter, I hope you're well.

I am writing this in the madness of packing boxes as Emma and I move home for the 4th time in five years. It has been a week of well needed rain and some not so welcome wind as we head towards the winter months. The courses have responded well to the deluges of rain we have had in the last week and it looks good for a good season of repair if the weather is one our side. Some of you may have noticed that Malloy has been out tining the greens on the main course this week and this will continue during the week and into next week. Please bear with the greenstaff as they complete their works, be patient as we cannot do these works at any other time. The reason we have great greens is because of the works we do during the year.

The big guns return

It’s been a strange year for the European Tour so far. Cancelled events, rescheduled tournaments and even new tournaments created. The pandemic hit the Tour hard and with relatively modest prize money on offer in the past few months, many of Europe’s biggest names have been Stateside.

This week will be different, though. The likes of Tommy Fleetwood, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Ian Poulter will return for the Scottish Open following the conclusion of the big-money FedEx Cup and the U.S. Open. It should be an exciting week of top-quality golf in East Lothian. We can’t wait!

World Handicap System 2020

The dreaded .1 will disappear forever and our handicaps will apply the world over, whether we’re playing at our home club, the Old Course, or that bucket list layout in Florida.

If you still don’t know your course rating from your slope, your hard cap from your playing conditions calculation, then we are here to help. David Kernohan is handicapping and course rating officer for Scottish Golf and is leading the way in implementing the new system north of the border.

Great golf continues

Another great week of golf has been completed and we have had some great scores once again. This keeps the trend of great golf continuing.

Warren:

Men's September Medal
Brent Bull - nett 71

Another win for Brent with a great score considering an awful starting three holes. Resilience paced the way to the win holding on in poor conditions for a great score of nett 71.A special mention to Nigel Barlow pipped to second place with a great 71 nett also. Great to see you playing in the comps Nigel, keep it up.

Championship:

Men's Weekend Stableford
Paul Nicholls - 35 points

Well done to new member Paul on his first win at Littlestone. A very steady 35 points in the weekend's awful conditions takes the prize. A birdie at the very difficult 8th hole certainly helped the cause as did a closing par for a three point finish.

Men's Michael Davison Trophy
Jeremy Smith & Geoffrey Smith - 40 points

Many congrats to the Smith brothers with a great score in some very difficult conditions indeed. A very steady scoring day indeed with seven three-point scores and a birdie to finish and take the win. Well done gentlemen.

Vets Francis Marchant Trophy
Howard Cocker - 41 points

Brilliant scoring from Howard and all those hours practice have come good. With a card that had no less than nine three point scores Howard took the win by two points from Tin Deane. Well done Howard, hopefully the confidence will rise with this great win.

Men's Tuesday Stableford
Christopher Thain - 42 points

Well, what can I say about this score. Quite simply superb. For a twelve handicap player the round Christopher put together was brill. With eight three point scores and no less than 14 pars there was only ever one winner. Well done Chris, great score.

Artisans Sunday Competition
Sam Allaway - nett 79

Serial Artisan winner Sam, takes the win once again in some of the worst conditions of the year. Closing with a birdie Sam took the win and with a nett 79 you can see how hard it must have been.

That’s all for this week’s competition results as we lead into another week of competitive golf. Coming up this week is the AGM’s fun competition straight after the new Captains Drive-in at 12:00pm. We have places available in the competition so please enter, you never know you might get me as your partner. Nor sure if that’s a good thing or not. 'Ladies Only' golf in a day.

On Sunday, 25 October, I will be running one of my golf in a day courses. This one is unfortunately fully booked once again but I was thinking of running more of these as we run through the winter and into the new season, next year. The cost for the day is £90 and includes lunch. During the day you can expect to meet new friends and get a grip of all aspects of the game in a sinlge day. Finishing with a few holes on the course, it's a day for all levels of player from the beginner to the expert.

One of the reasons to start these days once again is to try and bring like minded ladies together to enjoy a days golf in a stress free environment and to learn with new friends the game we all love.

Anyone interested in any future programmes please get in touch and we can ensure you get an invite to the next one. For any gentlemen who might like to get invovled in their own coaching days please let me know and we can endeavor to put something together for you also. Great fun with new friends it is wnhat golf should be all about.

Getting it right

Finding the right putter throws up a lot of questions: Putter length? Toe hang or face-balanced? And, of course, blade or mallet? As you’ll see on Tour, everybody has their own preference. But let’s put that final question under the microscope for a second.

Standing water

There are some rules that all golfers are aware of and are applicable throughout the year. Some rules, however, are more suited to specific times of year. So, with winter on the horizon, let’s brush-up on what to do when your ball finds standing water on the course.

The first thing to note is that standing water is considered an “Abnormal course condition”, which means you can get relief if the water interferes with either your swing or your stance. This won’t cost you a stroke.

Of course, this relief cannot move you closer to the hole or give you a significantly improved angle to the pin. However, be sure to give yourself enough room so that you are clear of the standing water in both your stance and swing.
