Good morning everyone from another stunning day here at the links. Another 30-degree day and a very dry one indeed. With the amazing conditions and the greens putting as true as ever, the scoring has once again this week, been exceptional. We hav

Hello Golfers,

World Handicap system 2020

Hopefully, you found last week's introduction to Course Handicap and explanation of its calculation helpful. We are continuing that theme this week by highlighting our final secondary campaign 'Easy as H.C.P', which will be important when playing golf from November 2nd.

Introducing 'Easy as H.C.P'!

As we mentioned last week before any player starts their round they must convert their Handicap Index into a Course Handicap. This will determine how many shots they will receive when playing a golf course from any set of tees.

An easy way for a player to remember this is to think 'HCP'. This stands for:

H - Handicap Index

C - Course Handicap

P – Play Golf

This should act as a prompt for golfers trying to remember the key elements of the WHS when they arrive at the golf club. It's helpful that many golfers will already recognise HCP as an abbreviation for handicap.

Firstly, they will need to know their Handicap Index.

Secondly, they will calculate their Course Handicap using the Slope & Course Rating table.

Finally, head out onto the golf course and play.

It's as easy as HCP!

Competition Golf

Another week of golf has gone by and the scores have been as good as they have been in the last few weeks. Here are a few of the scores from another exceptional weeks golf.

Warren:

Vets. Club Championship. John Gilbert Gross 78+79 Net 66+67.

Many congrats to John on two great rounds and very consistent indeed. Helped by a birdie at the 17th on day one and by a stellar finish of 4 straight pars on day two he was the model of consistency. Well done John.

Mens. Stableford. Chris Carr: 44 points.

A great round by Chris pipping Marc Turley to the spoils with a great round of gross 74. With 8 three-pointers and a four-pointer to boot, it really was his day and the score showed that. A great finish indeed with 4 straight three-pointers to take the spoils of the day and earn himself a one-shot cut to a 14 handicap.

Championship

Artisans. Weekend Stableford. Gary Dennis net 70.

A great front nine from Gary with six straight pars from the first and an outward nine of one over. A well-crafted round by Gary and well deserved.

Ladies. Weekly Stableford. Bilgi McDermott. 43 points.

What a great round from Bilgi. Bilgi has been working very hard on her game and it is certainly paying dividends. A birdie at the first set up the confidence ready for the rest of the round which included eight, three-point scores and a four-point score to boot. Many congrats Bilgi on this score, you certainly deserve all the spoils with all the practice you put in. Maybe now you realise how good you actually are and how good you could be going forward! Keep it up.

Mens weekend Stableford. Dibran Zeqiri 43 points.

Wow, what a round from Dibran. A gross 67 playing off 3 was a great score indeed. An eagle at the first hole certainly helped the cause and with an outward nine of four under, 32, he must have been thinking course record on the 10th tee. A brilliant round if six three-point scores and a four-pointer on the first hole. Many congrats to Dibran who hasn’t been able to play too much this year, I hope to see you down a lot more in the coming months. Many congrats.

Mens Tuesday Stableford. Robert Lench 43 points.

Another 43 points hit the scorers tent and another great round form one of our members. Robert birdies both of the front nine par fives giving an outward nine of twenty-three points. With six three-point scores and three, yes three, four-point scores it certainly was Roberts day as he also picks up the Vets Emerton Court trophy to boot. Many congratulations on your win Robert. Commiserations do go to Tim Russell this week as well for shooting seasons best one under par gross and missing out by a point. Keep it up, Tim.

And finally a quick mention for Warren member Ted Walsh who beat his age for the first time this week shooting a 79 with playing partner Paul Cugley in a friendly match. I am sure Paul got the beers in after such a great round. Well done Ted, a milestone indeed.

Home winner

A step into the past.
John Jacobs the father of the PGA Professional.

This week I was packing a few boxes ready for our house move and I began to pack up my library of coaching books that I have. I have a great deal of these books ranging from David Leadbetter's first books through to Harry Vardon's books. A few weeks ago I mentioned the Hogan Book which is my pride and joy and this week I found another of these little gems.

John Jacobs is, without doubt, one of the finest coaches and golf educationalists the world has ever seen. I have been a long advocate of a lot of his teachings and they are as relevant today as they were in the 1950s. A superb player in his own right John had the gift of understanding the person and was a master at looking and fixing almost instantly. His book “50 years of golfing wisdom” is a fine read indeed and has some of the simplest instructions you could possibly give someone to improve their game. Like cooking, there are very few new ideas just adjustments to the tried and tested and a lot of these John invented and used.

One such paragraph in the book has always resonated with me and it starts with the heading

Swing, or move from position to position.

Should you really swing the club? Or should you merely move through a series on contrived positions of carefully thought out movements? A rolls Royce without and the engine may look impressive but it’ll never leave the garage. In the same way, a golf swing without the engine, however beautifully contoured each part may be, is never going to move the ball out of your shadow. To do that, your swing, whatever else it lacks, must have power, motivation. It must be a swing. In the simplest of golfing terms, you must hit the ball!!!

Never a truer statement said about the game. Sometimes we get caught up in all the parts of the swing in pursuit of something that resonates with perfection in our own mind. In truth, it doesn’t exist and we sometimes just forget to hit the blooming thing!

Video of the Week

Golf is not an easy sport. However, it can be made a little easier by knowing how to play specific shots, such as out of thick rough or out of a divot. Enjoy this week's video as two European Tour players run through the must-dos when faced with these shots.
