World Handicap System 2020

Do you understand the changes?

With only a few weeks left, the World Handicap System is getting ever closer. Here are a few of the questions I have been asked over the last few weeks:

How will existing handicaps be used for the World Handicap System? Also, is my handicap expected to change when the system goes live?

Existing scoring records will be retained and, where possible, be used to calculate an initial Handicap Index under the WHS. For many players, their handicap will change only slightly as they will be coming from systems which are generally similar to the WHS. However, this will be dependent on many factors – including the number of scores available upon which the calculation of an initial WHS Handicap Index can be based. National Associations are being encouraged to communicate this message to clubs and golfers, i.e. that the more scores available in the scoring record at the time of transition, the less impact golfers may see on their new WHS Handicap Index.

Is the new golf handicap system mandatory?

Yes. In Great Britain & Ireland, the current handicapping system, which is maintained by CONGU, will be replaced by one single, global system. It is designed so golfers will be able to obtain and maintain a handicap index and use this to compete on a fair and equal basis across any format, on any course around the world.

What's the difference between 'Course handicap' and 'Playing handicap'?

Slope rating and course rating are used to determine your course handicap, which represents the number of strokes a player receives from any given set of tees prior to the terms of the competition. If a handicap allowance is applied, the adjusted course handicap is defined as a playing handicap, which represents the number of strokes a player gives or receives for the competition.

What is a Slope Rating?

It indicates the standard difficulty of a golf course for the “bogey golfer" relative to the scratch player. Every set of tees will have a slope rating and those numbers will vary between 55 and 155. The higher the slope rating, the greater the difference expected between the scores of those scratch and bogey golfers.

In the coming weeks, I will be posting further updates as to what happens next and what to expect in the coming months and indeed when it all takes off on the 2nd November. One thing is for sure, it looks complicated but it will revolutionise golf around the globe and I am sure will be a success. Any questions, get in touch below.
