Hello Golfers,

Welcome to this week's newsletter. I am writing this from a hotel room in Royal Ascot getting ready to play the Captain/Pro Challenge tomorrow (Thursday) at Royal Ascot Golf Club. We have been for a reccy of the course and it’s a fiddly course with a few surprises for some poorly executed shots. We are both feeling confident and I shall report back on how we have done in next week’s news.

Back at the club, we have had a little of the rain the rest of the country is experiencing but by no means enough. The rain we have had has really made a difference with the fairways becoming greener. That said, we need more, so the rain dancing shall continue for another week. We have managed to get the water cannons going on the main course this last couple of days and reporting back, it has been all good for the turf although not so if you hit your ball into the middle of the watering area. Good luck staying dry but it actually may well cool you off in these very hot few weeks we have had.

It's about to get interesting

The Northern Trust begins this week, marking the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs on the PGA Tour. The event, held at TPC Boston, will be followed by the BMW Championship before culminating in Atlanta at The Tour Championship. It’s a hell of a payday for the winner ($15 million), as well as a lot of prestige; joining a list of golf’s modern greats.

Justin Thomas has already wrapped-up the $2 million Wyndham Rewards prize for the best regular-season player, with PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa finishing second. Thomas will be hoping to join Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods as the only players to win the FedEx Cup multiple times (both have won it twice), but it won’t be easy.

Competition Golf

The competition results for the last week have indeed continued the trend of great golf with some astonishing scores including a nett 57 on the Warren on Saturday. Here are a few details of this week’s competitive golf:

Warren:

Vets August Medal - John Gilbert - nett 65

(A very consistent score from steady Eddie Johnny. All topped off with a nice birdie at 17. Well played John certainly deserved and welcome back to the winners enclosure)

Junior Medal - Arthur Saunders - nett 65

(Great scoring from Arthur with an outward nine of 34, 2 over par helped with a birdie 2 at the 9th. Now only 0.1 from a single figure handicap. Well done Arthur)

Warren Men's Medal - Marc Turley - nett 57

(Well, what can I say. Marc has absolutely destroyed the field with an amazing round full of great scores. An outward nine of 33 and a returning nine of 37 a gross 70 was a great score and earned a significant cut to his handicap. Well done Marc a great score well deserved)

Warren Ladies Stableford - Sylvia Vickerman - 37 points

(Many congrats to Sylvia with a great round with no less than 6 three point scores. Many congrats on your win which sets you up for hopefully winning the Kent Ladies Rooke Salver being played on the Warren on Monday)

Championship:

Ladies Weekday Stableford - Sally Stowell - 37 points

(Great score from Sally, helped with two birdies on the 2nd hole and the 7th hole. Brilliant scoring on those seriously long holes for the ladies. All those group sessions on driving must certainly be working. Many congrats and well played)

Ladies weekend Stableford - Barbara Down - 39 points

(Well, Barbara returns to the winning circle once again with another great round. 8 pars and a birdie on arguably the hardest hole the 16th, helped her put together another superbly crafted round. Many congrats and very well done once again)

Men's Medal - Bob Wilson - nett 65

(One of our newer members Bob, certainly planned his way around the course at the weekend. A very well put together front nine of 39 was followed by a great 41 back nine giving a well-deserved win. Pipping John Horton by one stroke, a special mention to Jack Holland who alongside Jamie Guppy shot gross 67’s in the first Medal since lockdown. Special mention to Harvey Sladden who keeps the good play going with another good score. He has dropped his handicap by two strokes since lockdown, no mean feat for a single figure handicapper)

Men's Tuesday Stableford - Peter Field - 41 points

(What a start to Peters round being 2 under after 5 holes. An outward nine of 1 over setup what was aways going tobe a superb round and a difficult one to bet. Well done Peter all that range practice has paid off)

World Handicap System

Following last week's explanation of Slope Rating, we now move into the first part of arguably the most important area of the new WHS, Handicap Index. This phrase will become synonymous with golfers in the lead-up-to, and following, the November 2nd introduction of the new system, and we are going to be telling you all about it over the next two weeks.

Handicap Index will:

- Measure the ability of a player
- Be portable from course to course
- Allow players to complete fairly, therefore promote inclusivity within the game

A Handicap Index is calculated from the best eight scores from a players last 20 rounds. As a new score is submitted, a player's Handicap Index will automatically update to the most recent 20 scores. A player's Handicap Index will update promptly overnight after the submission of an acceptable score and be ready before the next time they play.

How to obtain a Handicap Index?

When we adopt the WHS in England, most golfers will have a Handicap Index generated based on their existing records. However, for new golfers to gain their Handicap Index they will have to submit a minimum of 54 holes (using any combination of 9 and 18 holes).

Initially, their Handicap Index will be the lowest of their three rounds minus two strokes, and this will continue to be built until the 20 scores are achieved. The maximum Handicap Index for any player is 54, and in order for players to obtain a recognised Handicap Index a player must be an affiliated member of a golf club.

Hopefully, this provides you with a good understanding as to what a Handicap Index is, how golfers will obtain one, and why it is so important to the new system.

Emergency services member request

One of our members is an emergency services responder and he put me in contact with this new App the emergency services are recommending we all get. After a few people falling ill on the course and close by I thought it pertinent to let you all know about the great idea and APP.

Well, in this week’s edition I am keeping a low profile. Looking to the sea, it is one of the hardest holes on the course and rightly so. I have seen some very difficult pins on the green here recently and its set to be a doozer in this Friday pin change.
