Good afternoon everyone from a sunny and hot Tenerife. I’ve managed to sneak away for a few days’ rest, but rest assured I’m still keeping an eye on things from my sun lounger... |
Sit back, relax and enjoy this week's read. I will see you all very soon on the links. |
The importance of Hollow Coring
As I am sure you are all aware by now, the course works have started early and are well underway. The first part of this process is hollow coring the problem fairways and paths, a very important starting point, as it does the following:
|
It is sadly inevitable we will have to use mats on our Championship course from the middle of October. Once the cores are taken, we will have to dress and seed the problem areas and I am sure you understand why we can’t play from these areas. It is all very disappointing and the club understands this, the weather has been against us and the lack of moisture has really not helped our programmed works during the first three quarters of the year.
In figures collated by our Greens Chairman and our greens staff, we are 45% down in rainfall compared to last year. It’s been a steady decline year on year for the last six years. Our climate is changing for the long term and this year's unprecedented response from our greenkeepers, advisors and committees has been as a result of these changes.
A more detailed plan of works will be made available to members in the coming weeks and although disruptive, a plan to do nothing would be our only other option. We have a team who know and understand the courses we play on and they are best equipped to let us know what to do going forward. Please give them time and your support where possible, I know they would appreciate it.

Pro-AM
Thanks to everyone who attended last weekend’s Pro-AM. We had a healthy field of 22 teams, with some great scoring in what turned out to be a five-club wind on some holes. It’s not often I can’t reach the 17th with a four-iron but it only just made it over the middle bunker. Well done to Bruce for liaising with the PGA and for organising our sponsors. Thanks again to everyone involved.

Exciting new projects
In the coming months, the Pro Shop will be re-structuring how we coach here at the club. I really want to provide what you all want when it comes to coaching. It’s here I would like your help to guide us in what you require, if anything, from our coaching activities during the year. We will be doing themed monthly coaching evenings during next summer which will be totally FREE to our members. This is one idea, but what would you like to see and on what days and times. Group Coaching sessions have been popular and the intermediate coaching on a Tuesday at 10:00am and the Ladies Coffee Mornings on Fridays at 10:00am will still continue. Don’t forget these are for ALL members and guests, so bring a friend if you fancy it. We will be having a coaching noticeboard in the main clubhouse opposite the ladies boards, all coaching programmes and events will be displayed here and in these newsletters. Please support these programmes when you can.

The greatest ball striker ever to have lived
Sitting here sipping a small beverage, non-alcoholic of course, I’ve been ploughing through YouTube looking at golf videos and I came across one of my favourites. Now, how many of you have heard of the greatest ball-striker ever to have lived, Moe Norman.
|
Arguably one of the World’s finest strikers of a ball and not many people have heard of him. I’ve attended three coaching seminars on some of his theories and you have to give it to him he’s one clever fella, if a little unorthodox. Take a look at this short video introducing Moe, I only wish I was able to watch him hit balls, I believe it was amazing to watch.

New collections have landed
The shop now has its full Autumn/Winter stocks in-store and it's looking very nice and toasty as well as very dry in our new ranges from Kjus, Galvin Green and Under Armour. Pop in and have a look, all competitively priced and price matched. In the next couple of months, I will be introducing a members-only logo on some garments. As soon as they come in, I would like members feedback on what they have produced for us. I will let you know when they are in to view.

The popularity of Distance Measuring Devices (DMDs) has been growing for several years as golfers seek as much help as possible whilst out on the course. Our recent survey indicated that over 70% of you choose to use one, so we thought we'd highlight one of our favourites in this week's newsletter. |
| Garmin Approach S40 watch
|
|
GPS devices are not just about reading front, middle and back yardages. Well, in some cases they are, but not when it comes to Garmin’s Approach S40 watch. As we know, the course can be played several different ways and the Approach S40 displays distances to hazards and doglegs at a glance, which will prove vital when trying to take your course management to the next level.
|
In fact, at this time of the year when a wet course is a regular occurrence, knowing your yardages has never been more important. This is where the S40 comes into its own as it allows you to alter the pin's position on your watch so you can get highly accurate distances. Pretty clever stuff! We have a brilliant review video that you can view by clicking the link below. |
