In The Bag I have always been a bit of a tech head when it comes to equipment. I am always poking around in online forums looking at what equipment people are playing with and how I may be able to optimise what I am doing with my own game. Trends do come and go and top players tend to find something they are comfortable with and stick with it for years on end. That made me think that most of the time our clubs as professionals sit in the storage rooms of the club or in the boot of the car and the people who are most interested in our equipment never get to look at what we are using as professionals. So, here is what is in my bag and a few bits of info on why I have them there starting this week with my Driver. Driver: - Callaway Rogue 9 Degree Sub Zero (set to 8 degree) - Aldila Rogue Tour 72 gram X flex shaft - Grip Golf Pride MCC Plus4 grip 2 layers of tape in grey I had a Cobra driver for four years before I got this one from Callaway last year. The difference for me was astonishing. My bad shot has always been a big toe ended duck hook that went left and continued that way until it was truly lost in jungle so deep an elephant would feel uncomfortable in there. Now this shot came to visit not very often, but it was very destructive. The Callaway driver stops that from happening or at least significantly reduces the effects of the toe hit which causes gear effect (very complicated but if you want an explanation I can explain in detail). The internal weighting and dual bars behind the face help with this. I was definitely sold on the head but the stock shaft wasn’t right. I have used the Rogue shaft for many years and it just fits how I swing the club. It is very stiff with very little twist (or torque) which makes it very easy for me to “feel” where the head is throughout the swing. Finally the grip. I use the Plus4 grips because I never understood why these hadn’t been invented before. Think about it, a golf grip tapers from top to bottom but both of your hands are roughly the same size. Therefore the lower part of the grip will be too small! Golf Pride came up with the idea of the lower part of the grip being thicker with significantly less tapering. Simple, you would be amazed how much difference this grip made to me personally. I was so right hand dominant but this grip took a bit of the dominance away. Eureka! As for how far I hit it? Well it goes down each year, but currently I average about 265 carry with a run out to about 285-290. Well next week I will be going through some other bits of my own equipment and give you a few reasons behind why they are in my bag. Have a wonderful weeks golf and see you all soon at the links.
